We automatically install Debian 10 Buster on newly ordered servers together with the VPS center.
A new version of Debian is released every two years. It happened this year as well. We chose Debian as our primary distribution for many reasons (mainly security and stability). The new Debian 10 is called Buster. It should normally have support for another 3 years + another two years under the LTS program. This post summarizes the most eye-catching news:
Mariadb 10.3
We already had a request for a newer version of MySQL on Debian Stretch. Unfortunately, only version 10.1 was in the repositories. We ourselves have been on the fence about when we can please you with the newer Maria database. No wonder… for example, JSON support and stability and speed optimization are great news.
Window functions
Many users find the newly implemented window functions support very interesting . This function allows you to create TOP N-queries in aggregated specific database by industry sub-queries. This makes it possible to create even more complicated queries that would require much more time without this technology.

JSON functions
Mariadb now supports JSON functions , which makes working with JSON data much more convenient.
Recursive Common Table Expression
Recursive CTEs are supported since MariaDB 10.2. CTEs are a standard SQL function and are temporary named result sets. Suitable for more complex hierarchical data.
PostgreSQL 11
You’ve written the most about the newer PostgreSQL because of its support for XML and JSON data types. We’re so glad it’s here. Another great feature is a much faster ALTER of tables or better work with text, regular expressions, etc.
Another nice news is that you can now use multiple processors for one command. However, the most amazing change in PostgreSQL 11 is the JIT for the call statement. Now it’s easy to accurately manage transactions. This is a revolutionary step, and PostgreSQL is the first database to integrate this technology.
Partitioning
Partitioning is the part where the progress of PostSQL 11 can be seen the most. Here, the developers build on the previous version and improve it on the side of various limitations. Users can now choose the default partition or for each row after triggers commands even for partitioned tables. These can now contain a unique index ev. primary key.

Yes, you can still choose between these two web servers in our VPS center. There is a lot of news here, but it is rather of a minor nature. Optimizations, bugfixes, speedups and such.
What else caught our attention?
LUKS2 encryption
The cryptsetup command will create an encryption disk, and unless you specify otherwise, it will be in the new LUKS2 format. However, LUKS1 is still supported.
The default firewall is nftables
Nftables, which we already know from Debian 9, now becomes the default firewall. However, classic IPtables still remains in the top ten.

We debugged our VPS Center before release. From now on, we are installing new servers on the Buster distribution. We also added support for older PHP. There was only 7.X in Buster and we understand that you probably wouldn’t be satisfied with that.
If you have an older server Debian Squeeze, Jessie, Wheezy … we recommend that you arrange a migration with us.

End of clicking exceptions. Your server administration will now be accessible via HTTPS including a trusted certificate .
Let’s see how to generate a certificate for administration. We will automatically prepare the certificate for newly installed servers (from June 2019). If you have your own certificate for administration, consult with us about the change first.
Log in to the administration and click on Server administration and in the One-time actions section , as in the screenshot, and click on Activate Let’s Encrypt for vas-server.cz and you will have everything ready within a few minutes.

Negotiating the condition was not easy, but perhaps everyone here really wanted it and we are glad that we can put it out of our minds.
New editor and syntax highlighter for configuration files
New script – IP Count
Another addition to our “Swiss Army Knife” is a script that can agent email list be found after logging in to SSH in /root/bin/webserver_ip_count.sh and will definitely come in handy someday.
It can find out who is overloading the server or domain in the last 2 hours. A simple number of requests per IP address. It is useful if it is a DDoS attack (even of one IP address) or traffic has increased, etc.
If you call it with the -A parameter, the result is selling texts for advertisements for all domains, if -d domain.tld, then only for a specific domain.
Floating side menu
This news will be especially appreciated by matadors who already have dozens of domains on one server on our servers. Thanks to the floating menu, you can now choose the section that needs to be visited even for “bottom” domains
